THATS IT, I'M GETTING DRUNK

Tuesday, May 31, 2005
The hits just keep on coming. Apparently, judges in Indiana have been endowed with the moral and constitutional authority to legally decree what religions are permissible for parents to teach their children.

I know, I know, this is just some radical Hoosier jacked up on tractor fumes who is (hopefully) going to receive a Bruce Lee style drop kick applied by the appellate court. However, the disdain that some in the government have recently shown towards the First Admendment is more than enough to make this libertarian minded blogger to go drink some gin and call it a night.

THEY ARE COMING

More of our freedoms are on the chopping block today with another push towards government regulation of speech.

Here we go again with this loophole idea:

Advocates for rules say they are necessary to prevent groups such as corporations and labor unions from exploiting loopholes.

What "loophole?" None other than that pesky First Admendment John McCain and co. tried to kill a few years ago.

What is a labor union? I think a reasonable, if vague, definition would be a collection of individuals united in some sort of common goal. Do those individuals sacrifice their civil librities for participating in such a group? Can they no longer speak without government approval?

How about that dreaded entity the "corporation?" Individuals trying to-- ghasp-- make money. Well, its obvious those individuals shouldn't be allowed to comment on politics without heavy government regulation.

The draft FEC rules reportedly say that:

These rules would not affect citizens who don't take money from political action committees or parties.

Bullshit. That promise is a deception of Orwellian proportions.

Lets say, very hypothetically, that this blog accepts a blogad from lp.org, the national Libertarian party website. And, we get paid .0000015 cents per click. Are we, Minus and Nemesis, no longer allowed unabridged free speech? Must we now apply for waivers and special interest group status to avoid violation of federal election laws? Is our content now fair game for Government censors?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press

The FEC and Congress need to stop trying to tell me what the Constitution doesn't say.
Nemesis

FURTHER THOUGHTS:

I know that this law is reminiscent of Woody Allen's tyrant in Bananas who outlaws underwear. Even if the law is widely unenforceable-- which it surely would be-- there is still a real danger in it. Even if they don't always abide by their better judgement, both Conservatives and Liberals argue that unenforceable laws, among other things, engender a disrepect for all laws and make heros out of law breakers. That, and I wanted to reference Woody Allen because I know Minus just loves him so much.

HE'S BACK

A Man In The Arena has been discharged from rehab, and is now blogging again.

In particular, take a look at his post about the ongoing debate about how the Consitution should be properly interpreted.

All is not well on that blog, however. Apparently some particularly vicious hacker broke into his site and changed the colors to the most violently bright tones this side of a super nova. I'm only typing this post after spending the past fifteen minutes writhing on the floor in a hyper-bright color induced spastic seizure.

HOLY QUR'AN!

With increasing tension over prison scandals, this piece is no surprise. What is even more 'not' surprising is the fact the media has ignored, in large part, the Qur'an being mishandled by detainees themselves.

All told, there are 13 allegations and subsequent investigations into the mishandling of the Qur'an by US troops. Out of the original 13, five have come into light. When I think of the alleged mishandling of the book, I think of flushing it down the toilet as was suggested by a detainee. Well, apparently, the detainee in question never even saw a mishandling of the Qur'an, let alone someone flushing it. The five 'mishandlings' come in the form of placing two Qur'an on top of a television, standing over a Qur'an while interrogating someone, etc.

The US troops perhaps have been indoctrinated into what the Qur'an is and that they shouldn't mistreat the book. It seems to me, that in the course of their duties, US troops may have come into contact with the book. So what. What bothers me the most is that the media has blown it up to make the troops look bad, again. How often are you hearing of the 15 confirmed cases of the detainees mistreating their own book? Not a lot. Allegedly, one detainee has even gone so far as to tear pages from this 'oh so important' book.

Hunger strike all you want to Hadji. In the meantime, can you recommend any good toilet reading? I can.

This piece is another naming of vindication of not only the applied doctrine but of general sentiment.

I especially like how they break down the counterparts so it is clear to see. For example: Tony Blair, Silvio Burlusconi, Gerhard Schroeder, Jacques Chirac, Paul Martin (what's that aboot?), Junichiro Koizumi and Vladimir Putin are all characterized in ways that makes the reader realize who the good guys are.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE

Seems I overestimated the American public. Fewer Americans than I had believed begin violently vomiting at the thought of a President Hillary.

Of course most polls this early only show who has name recognition, and is more of a celebrity popularity contest than an actual indicator of how people will vote. And, I should add, the bookies are running her odds as 9/2.

Still, 1st Lady Bill Clinton is such a horrible thought, I'm gonna have to shotgun some High Life in order to sleep tonight.

MARINES RETURN TO THE FIGHT: SEMPER FI

More than 1000 Marines, Sailors and Soldiers are taking part in this counterinsurgency operation located about 140 miles north of Baghdad.

Unfortunately, two Devil Dogs have perished thus far. This town is so rough that the Iraqi police stayed clear of it. The Marines are returning after they thought they cleared the town of insurgents.

What needs to happen is the trained Iraqi personnel begin doing this sort of thing on their own. I realize they have never been faced with this before, but, this is the state of their country right now...have some pride. Take it back from those who obviously neither deserve nor promote democracy and freedom.

IF THEY ONLY KNEW

As part of the blog reconstruction effort that Nemesis first put forth, I recoded the blog and came up with what you see. If you like it, please leave comments, good or bad. Based on your comments, I will either A) More than likely degrade you in some way, or B) Return the gesture by linking to your blog.

An additional portion of the reconstruction that is not readily viewable to the end user is the WebRing part. I was originally going to include at least four WebRings that I am now a member of, including America's Military WebRing. When I submitted my site to be included in the ring, I received an email stating that my blog was not militarily oriented enough to be included. Now that I am not military enough, I may not include the coded references until I deem necessary.

To those who know, this is a huge irony. To those who don't: guess.

NEWS: AN OLDY, BUT A GOODY

I am not fond of Fonda, Jane, 1 each. This piece is older news, but this site was not around when it broke to post it...so here it is!

Demonstrating patience by not rushing the table where Fonda was signing her new book, Michael A. Smith (a Vietnam veteran) waited his turn and then spit tobacco juice into the face of Jane Fonda.

"I consider it a debt of honor," he told The Star for a story on its Web site, www.kansascity.com. "She spit in our faces for 37 years. It was absolutely worth it. There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did."

There are a lot of veterans not of the Vietnam era who I am positive would have loved to do what you did.

DRUG KINGPIN, OR PRINCESS?

A beauty queen apparently has been caught for smuggling dope into Bali. Also of interest, is an investigation concerning drug smuggling at Australian airports.

90% of the people polled for an Australian survey maintain that Schapelle Corby is innocent and a victim of said smuggling operation. 90%. I am wondering how many people were polled to begin with; and frankly, who they were. Friends? Family? Colleagues (or are these the people 'working' at the airport)? 90% seems like such a large number to me.

Honestly, I can't say whether or not the lady is guilty or not. I would definitely follow up further on the whole drug investigation that is ongoing thing! If she is innocent, I certainly hope that she gets what she deserves; otherwise, it's prison in Bali (that's bad).

A LITTLE CLARIFICATION

McCain has one of, if not the, coolest, and honorable, backgrounds and personalities of anybody in national politics. After all, how can you not like the person who came up with this:

In June (1998), McCain broke the "Chelsea rule" at a Republican Party Fund-raiser. The reason Chelsea Clinton is ugly, according to McCain, is because Janet Reno is her father.

His record for the past 10 years, however, has been dismal. Tobacco taxes and fines, closing the first admendment "loophole", now telling citizens that they are to be subjected to mandatory medical examinations...just because-- McCain has been on the wrong side of them all.

Reason magazine did a terrific profile of McCain in '99 thats worth a look here.

"REPUBLICAN" JOHN McCAIN

John McCain has just released the eagerly awaited sequel to his "I Hate The First Admendment Act." This time, instead of abridging the freedom of speech, he is forcing private citizens to undergo mandatory drug testing, complete with draconian punishments for offenders, simply because of their chosen profession.

A previous Senator from Arizona commented on overly ambitious do-gooders in politics:

Now those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth, and let me remind you they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyranny.

Will somebody please invent a way to bring Goldwater back from the dead? Please.

PROGRESS OFFENSIVE TO INSURGENCY

U.S. and Iraqi troops launch a surprise offensive to round up more insurgents and terrorists in the al-Anbar Province. This is another great stepping stone for the coalition forces. I think that the new Iraqi army/police have a bit more training to do before they can conduct this type of operation on their own, but nonetheless, it is a step in the right direction.

Together, US and Iraqi forces are little by little making Iraq into the country that the people have only dreamed of in the past. The ultimate goal of the coalition is not to occupy someone else's country, but to free an oppressed people. They are making huge strides. What a lot of people fail to realize is that the process of reconstruction takes a long time. An insurgency only hinders this process. It is not a process that can happen overnight as infrastructures have to be rebuilt, electricity must be restored, an economic base must be established, a democratic government (in this case) must be put into place and a police/army force has to be trained.

Good work, I hope that there is more of this in the future. These types of operations can only dissuade the insurgents to realize how futile their cause is.

IDAHO MURDERS ARE SUSPECT

The events surrounding the triple homicide and two missing children in northern Idaho are suspect.

From what has been read thus far, select family members who are now deceased have had previous scrapes with the law due to association with 'petty' crimes and drug activity. To begin with, this is plainly not an environment conducive to productive child growth. What sort of nurturing and mentorship could possibly come out of a childhood like that?

There are two children missing, with police having interviewed one man who was at the home the night prior to the murders as well as the disappearances. It is hoped by many (including myself) that the children are alive. What is odd is that the kids' real father has been seen on national television making this statement: "Please, please release my children safely, they had nothing to do with any of this."

Any of what there sir? It could be that a drug deal (or associated 'petty' crime) has or had gone awry at one point in the sketchy family past, and now it is catching up to dear old dad in spades. Maybe just a scumbag meant to prey on an innocent family? What a shame that the children have to suffer the ordeal of not only watching three family members get bound and then bludgeoned to death, but also being abducted for someone else's nefarious actions.

Keep an eye on this one and hope the kids are alright, and that the associated guilty scumbag(s) are brought to justice.

DO NOT PASS PARADISE, DO NOT COLLECT 72 VIRGINS, JUST GO AWAY

The alleged 'mastermind' of several orchestrated attacks across Iraq (and possibly elsewhere) is injured.

Giving people like this the title of 'mastermind' is a misnomer. If morons like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold could incite the same type of terror, then they should also be considered 'masterminds' right? Wrong. Terrorists, domestic or otherwise, should not be given the amount of prestige and attention that they are as it does nothing for an effective solution to the problem and promotes that type of behavior.

While I feel that people such as bin Laden and al-Zarqawi held previous injuries of the psychological sort, it is now felt that al-Zarqawi could have been injured in 'battle'. The message of the website containing the news feels that Muslims should pray for his recovery. What I find ridiculous about the claim is that the website (which is a clearinghouse for garbage) would have you believe that Muslims in general support the insurgency. They clearly do not. In fact, you now have one of the most reactionary and voiced clerics of the Iraq war (al-Sadr) seeking a political role instead of a militant one. My guess is that many more reactionary types will follow suit. The insurgency, as it turns out, is a minority. The people want democracy, and now have access to it. They are not going to let some paltry band of thieves and murderers be their voice, and have made that clear in many instances.

al-Sadr is the young, brash individual who would have you believe (partially through our own media) that he was the spokesperson of not only the entire insurgency, but of an entire nation and religion. Clearly a mistake.

The insurgency in this case, is comprised of not only Iraqis, but other individuals who have answered the call of jihad and associated fatwa's. They would like to consider themselves radicals and freedom fighters. This is not the case. To be a freedom fighter, I think that you would have to be fighting for freedom and not opposing its progress. The people of Iraq are just now feeling the effects of freedom and democracy and crave more, so the insurgency does not hold water. They are clearly extremists and misguided fools, nothing more. The most radical thing going on in Iraq right now is not the insurgency, but democracy itself. Again, the insurgency does not hold water.

It is easier said than done of course, for me to say this. The insurgents obviously believe in their cause very deeply...but it is a futile one in the end. It is just a shame that the liberated people of Iraq must feel the effects of the select few 'spokesmen' of the minority. I am pretty sure that God does indeed have a plan for bin Laden, al-Zarqawi, al-Sadr and their like-minded cronies; I would venture to say, however, that the plan contains nothing about paradise or any virgins. Fools.

I laud the United States military and the associated intelligence communities for what they have accomplished so far. Keep up the good fight.

THE GREY LADY STRIKES AGAIN

Some controversy surrounding a NY Times book review:

(Author Winston Groom) feels the review is a typical Times attack on anyone who stands up for America, including a much-praised historian who happens to believe his country was in the right in World War II.

But that could only be true if the New York Times has shown itself to let its sophisticated anti-American views influence what should be its non-partisan reporting. That just can't be.

SYRIA SEVERS TIES WITH U.S.

It has been reported that Syria has severed military and intelligence ties with the United States over what they claim are: unjust American allegations.

Syria believes that the United States owes them something for the role they have taken against insurgents in Iraq. What role? I don't call providing a large portion of the insurgents in the form of foreign fighters a role, I call that state supported terrorism. What better reason to sever intelligence ties...I wouldn't want the US to find out about that either.

Syria further states that credit should be given for their withdrawl from Lebanon. No one wanted you there! Why would you be given credit for a withdrawl, when for all intents and purposes, you were kicked out?! You narrowly escaped having your country handed back to you on a stretcher.

CLINTON SUPPORTING IOWANS ONLY!

"There is no other agenda," Sure.

Senator Hilary Clinton is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2008 election without doubt. After the alleged 42nd President made a mockery of the office itself, why not add insult to injury by running in 2008?

I think that I can see her logic a bit more clear now though: "I have been a Senator for about 4 years now; I think I have what it takes to run the world. After all, the alleged 42nd President did it from 1993 to 2001, why can't I?"

No, seriously, we need a freshman Senator to run the world.

At any rate the latest 'strategic decision' seems like a waste to me. Why would you invite Red State constituents to your house, or is it just extended to the 4 people that would actually afford and support your nomination? I would name the so-called 'strategic decision' a bigoted analysis if anything.

I also find it ironic that she joined the impeachment inquiry staff advising the Judiciary Committee of the United States HOR in the impeachment inquiry against President Richard M. Nixon. That training, would in fact, come in handy at a later date.

TOM TAKES CRADLE ROBBING CRUISE

With my ever-growing disgust of the Hollywood elitist set and their fashionable liberal practices, I bring to your attention this piece.

Katie Holmes plays the part of the innocent young girl, while the cradle robber is played by scientologist Tom Cruise.

With this type of behavior on the rise in Hollywood, and by no means surprising, I find it repulsive. The trends of the Hollywood kids are questionable at best. I could err on the side of love, but I don't think that love is involved anywhere. Lust perhaps, is the defining characteristic of these people. For example, the shocking couple of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. Moore is easily old enough to be his mother, not to mention the fact she already has two marriages and an additional near miss (engagement to Emilio Estevez) under her belt.

Cruise who is twice-divorced says "Honestly, I haven't (had this kind of experience before)". Yes, and I am willing to bet that whatever 'experience' you are looking for will not be coveted for long you pedophile. That's like an 18 year old dating a 2 year old. "Show me the respect"!

WHAT PART DON'T THEY GET?

CNN and others are reporting on Bush's reaffirmation of vetoing any bill that funds/encourages embryonic stem cell research. Bush's opposition to such measures is relatively straight forward:

"I made [it] very clear to the Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life, I'm against that," Bush told reporters.

Destroying life to promote science -- even life saving science -- is unacceptable to Bush. Fair enough. The obvious extension is that no matter how important the science, no matter what the research may end up curing, it is not worth destroying life to obtain.

So why do his opponents focus on the "but this will save lives" argument? Bush essentially concedes the life saving potential of this kind of research, but remains opposed on moral grounds.

The answer is that his mainstream opponents, especially Republicans supporting the bill, are unwilling to make the moral argument against Bush. Two questions must be answered by supporters of embryonic research...

1) Are those cells being harvested from living humans?
2) If so, is it worth destroying life for the sake of research?

Of course there are those who would argue, resoundingly, yes to both questions-- but they are not, as most would define it, within the political mainstream.

Any kind of solution-- and reasonable, moral policy-- concerning stem cell research will require a very unabashed debate between the parties. The supporters of the research, however, seem to be unwilling to take up their end of the debate.
