I've argued for awhile that the left is so devoid of serious thought, that any real debate on any given issue consists between factions of the right. The principled argument against the war in Iraq didn't come from Democrats, but from the likes of Pat Buchanan and Reason magazine. Same goes for drug control policy, immigration, the death penalty, and even abortion. Here is another example. Jacob Sullum and Bob Barr face off about recent federal measures to prohibit lawsuits from being filed against gun manufacturers. Its a tough call, I'm still not entirely sure where I come down on the issue. But one thing is for certain, the debate that will produce any usable ideas is coming from libertarians and conservatives, traditional members of the right, while the left remains completely unhinged.
